Euro 2024: England’s Early Squad Sparks International Decisions for Premier League Stars
With Euro 2024 just six months away, England manager Gareth Southgate has already drafted an initial squad list — and it’s causing several Premier League talents to reconsider their international futures.
According to reports, Anthony Gordon, Harvey Barnes, and Tino Livramento are all exploring the possibility of switching allegiance to Scotland, as they currently appear unlikely to secure a place in Southgate’s final squad for the tournament in Germany.
Southgate’s Final Squad Due in March
Southgate is expected to announce his official 23-man England squad in March, ahead of high-profile friendlies against Brazil and Belgium. However, with competition fierce and squad stability a major factor, breaking into the team at this stage is difficult.
Meanwhile, Scotland manager Steve Clarke is monitoring several eligible players closely. Along with Gordon, Barnes, and Livramento, Newcastle midfielder Elliott Anderson is also being considered — meaning four Newcastle players could potentially choose to represent Scotland at Euro 2024.
Scotland’s Interest: Carver Confirms Four Newcastle Targets
John Carver, Clarke’s assistant and a former interim manager at Newcastle, confirmed the interest during an interview, saying:
“There are four in Newcastle.”
Carver emphasized that Scotland wants players who are genuinely committed to the national team’s journey. He encouraged the younger stars to first focus on their development at Newcastle before making major decisions about international representation.
Who Is Most Likely to Get an England Call?
Among the group, Anthony Gordon appears the closest to earning a late England call-up. After helping England win the U21 European Championship, he has momentum on his side. Still, Southgate’s squad is well-established, making late additions challenging.

Barnes, who has one England cap, has struggled with injuries this season — a factor that may reduce his chances of breaking back into the squad.
Tino Livramento
Livramento, formerly of Chelsea and Southampton, has been impressive with increased minutes at Newcastle. However, England’s depth at full-back makes competition particularly tough.
Elliott Anderson’s Uncertain Future
Elliott Anderson, 21, previously represented Scotland at youth level but withdrew from a senior call-up in September as he remained undecided about his long-term international future.
Carver reiterated that the decision is entirely up to Anderson. He advised the midfielder to focus on staying fit, performing well for Newcastle, and making an informed decision when the time feels right.

Carver also praised Steve Clarke’s approach, highlighting that the Scotland manager keeps the door open for any player who can strengthen the national team. He noted that Anderson still has time to grow and reflect, and whichever nation he chooses, he will be stepping into a bright future.
